 Adam ByarsProgram Director/Head CoachEmail
Adam took over as Program
Director in April 2007. He joined ASL in August 2005 as Head Age
Group Coach in Augusta. Here he has coached an Olympic Trial
Qualifier, Junior and Short Course National Qualifiers, Georgia
Zone Team members (Zone Champions and a Meet Record Holder),
National Top 16 swimmers, state record holders, state and sectional
champions and numerous finalists. Adam has been active in the
Georgia Swimming LSC serving on the Age Group and Coaches
committees, and currently serves on the Georgia Swimming Board of
Directors as the Chairperson of the Senior
Committee.
The club has grown from
approximately 125 year round swimmers in 2005 to the current size
of approximately 250. He was named the Georgia Age Group
Coach of the Year in 2008. Adam had three swimmers selected to the
USA Swimming 2008 Zone Select Camp and was selected to the camp
staff as an assistant coach. Adam grew up in East Tennessee,
swimming with the Pilot
Aquatic Club in Knoxville under Coach Gardner
Howland. He went on to the University of
Wisconsin where he swam on scholarship for
4 years under Coaches Nick and Eric Hansen. He graduated in
2002 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. Some of his
athletic accomplishments include Jr. National Qualifier and
Finalist (100 Fly, 200 IM), Sr. National Qualifier (100 Fly, 100
Back, 200 Back, 200 IM, 400 IM) and Olympic Trials Qualifier in
2000 (200 IM, 100 and 200 Back), Four time Big Ten Finalist, Three
time Academic All Big Ten, 2001 Division 1 All-American, 2000-2001
Team Captain at UW, and 2000-2001 MVP of UW. After he
graduated from college he moved to Washington state to pursue a
career in business. But swimming and coaching were Adam’s
passions so he and his family moved across country so he could
pursue his dream. Adam and his wife Ruth live in North Augusta with
their 5-year-old son Zachary. Ruth is pursuing her nursing degree
at USC-Aiken.
 Gary MauksLead Age Group Coach - Aiken Email
Gary moved to Aiken from New York
(temporarily retired), where he was a head USS coach and coached
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) college men’s and
women’s team. He has over 30 years of coaching experience
with all age levels and several different programs. He has coached
all levels from beginning to Olympic swimmers. Gary will be
coordinating the Age Group Program for ASL and directly coaching
Gold, Silver, Bronze, Senior Competitive, and Splash.
 Susan GoltraLead Age Group Coach - AugustaEmail
Sue joins ASL in September 2008,
and is a graduate of Georgia Southern University in
Statesboro. Sue grew up in Western Massachusetts and has been
around swimming her entire life. She will be the primary
coach of the gold groups in Augusta and will be assisting with the
Senior group.
 Kathleen GreelyLead Age Group Coach - RiverwoodEmail
Kathleen has been a coach
with
ASL
since 1999 and this year
will begin her duties as lead coach at our newest pool at Riverwood
Plantation. She has taught swimming for more than 20
years. She is now working with the Gold 2, High School,
Silver, Bronze, and Splash groups at Riverwood. As an avid
athlete herself, she uses her expertise to develop young swimmers
and thoroughly enjoys her work.
 Catherine LaveryAge Group Assistant Coach - AugustaEmail
Catherine has been coaching with
ASL since the winter of 2007. She swims with the ASL Masters
program and is an accomplished swimmer and triathlete. She
will be assisting in Augusta with the water and dry-land activities
for the Bronze, Silver and Gold groups.
 Belinda WatersAge Group Assistant Coach - AugustaEmail
Belinda has
directed the Splash Program in Augusta for the past 2
years, along with assisting with the Bronze and Silver
Groups. Belinda has taught group and private swim lessons
for Petersburg Racquet Club and with the Aquatic Center. She is
WSI- certified, with over 10 years experience. She currently works
with the YMCA Adaptive Aquatics Program. She continues to
coach the Brynwood Summer team and has for the past 2
years. She has also volunteered for the Richmond County
Recreation Department Swim Team, and assissted with Aquinas Swim
Team and Davidson’s Fine Arts Swim Team. In addition to all
this experience, she is a registered nurse for the Columbia County
Board of Education.
 Austin BanksAge Group Assistant Coach - AugustaEmail
This will be
Austin
’s first year with
ASL
after many years coaching the
Petersburg Racquet Club in the CSRA summer league. He will be
coaching the High School, Bronze, and Silver groups.
 Whitney NormanAge Group Assistant Coach - AugustaEmail
Whitney is pursuing her master’s
degree in Clinical Child Psychology at ASU and has several years
experience with various year-round and summer teams around the
state. She will be coaching the bronze and silver groups
in
Augusta
 Colleen HergottAge Group Assistant Coach - RiverwoodEmail
Colleen swam at the
University
of
Texas
under legendary coach Richard Quick, winning
4 national titles. She has taught swim lessons formally and
informally, as well as helped out with the PRC summer team.
She enjoys helping young swimmers with stroke technique and will be
assisting with the Bronze and Splash groups at
Riverwood.
 Mary-Catherine IveyAge Group Coach - AikenEmail
Mary-Catherine is a former ASL
swimmer who began coaching with ASL in the fall of 2006.
After a short break, she's back with ASL coaching with all groups
in Aiken!
